The /log command-line switch and the /passive command-line switch do not function as expected when you run the installation package that contains Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1

You run the installation package that contains Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1 (SP1). When you try to use some Microsoft Self-Extractor command-line switches to run the installation package, the command-line switches do not function as expected.

For example, you may experience the following problems:

• If you use the /log command-line switch, a log file is created for the installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. However, a log file is not created for the installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1. If errors are encountered during the installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1, you may be unable to determine what errors occurred.
• If you use the /passive command-line switch, you unexpectedly must accept the Microsoft Software License Terms and then select the installation options.

To work around these problems, use the following methods as appropriate for your situation.

Method 1: Install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1 separately

The installation package does not support the logging of errors during the installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1. To log errors during the installation of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1, install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 first. Then, use the /log command-line switch to install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 SP1.

Method 2: Use the /quiet command-line switch

To install the installation package without user interaction, use the /quiet command-line switch.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the installation package that contains Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Service Pack 1.
