OFF98: Pressing Accelerator Key or Transition Key Does Not Activate Menu Item

SYMPTOMS

Case 1

When you use Macintosh OS 8.5 and any of the programs listed in the "Applies to" section of this article, if you press F10 to activate the menu bar and then try to use your keyboard to activate a menu item, the menu item is not activated.

Case 2

If you try to access the menus in Excel 98 using the transition key (/), it does not work properly. If you type /f, the file menu appears. But it has a white background instead of a gray background and is not usable.

RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem described in Case 1 in the "Symptoms" section of this article, obtain and install the Mac OS 8.6 Update. Contact Apple Computer Inc. for more information about obtaining the Mac OS 8.6 Update.

WORKAROUND

Case 1

You may need to press the accelerator key for the menu item several times before the menu item is activated.

Case 2

You can use the mouse to access the menus correctly.
