An error occurs when you install Visual Studio products

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Visual Studio products on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may see the following event viewer error message:
The description for Event ID ( 26 ) in Source ( Application Popup ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: 16 bit Windows Subsystem, SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\VirtualDeviceDrivers. VDD. Virtual Device Driver format in the registry is invalid. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application...

CAUSE

This problem has one of the following causes:
  • The wrong Virtual Device Driver is installed for the operating system.
  • The Virtual Device Driver is incorrectly configured.

You can troubleshoot the error message by using either the FileMon.exe file or the RegMon.exe file.

If you use FileMon.exe or RegMon.exe, note that there are no entries that indicate that Setup.exe started. The system is interrupted before the Setup.exe file opens. Neither Visual Studio nor the MSDN Library is installed.
