You Cannot Install Virtual PC for Windows 4.1 or Earlier on a Computer Running Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Connectix Virtual PC for Windows 4.1 or earlier on a computer running Windows XP, you may experience one of the following behaviors:
  • The Virtual PC Setup program pauses or freezes unexpectedly, and you receive the following message:
    Now installing the Virtual PC Network Services driver. This process may take several minutes.
  • The Virtual PC Setup program completes as expected, but you cannot start Virtual PC.

CAUSE

Versions of Virtual PC for Windows that are earlier than version 4.1 do not support Windows XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the Virtual PC 4.x update.
  1. Log on to your computer using an account that has administrative credentials, and then run the Virtual PC 4.1 setup program.

    If Setup pauses or freezes, press CTRL+ALT+DEL, click Task Manager, click the Virtual PC setup program, and then click End Task.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Install the Virtual PC 4.x update. For information about how to download and install the Virtual PC 4.x update, visit the following Connectix Web site:

  4. Restart your computer.
