Virtual PC for Macintosh 5.0 Cannot Start When It Is Installed on a Volume that Was Formatted With the Mac OS Standard Format

The third-party products that this article discusses are manufactured by companies that are independent of Microsoft. Microsoft makes no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding the performance or reliability of these products.

SYMPTOMS

When you start Virtual PC for the first time, you may receive the following error message:
The permissions for support files could not be set correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Virtual PC requires certain support files to have specific permissions. Virtual PC cannot function correctly if it is installed on a volume that is formatted with Mac OS Standard format (supported by Mac OS 8.0 and earlier) or with any other volume format that does not support permissions. This is a limitation of Mac OS Standard format volumes.

RESOLUTION

Do not install Virtual PC on a volume that has been formatted with the Mac OS Standard format.
