Groove communications that use port 80 are unsuccessful on a computer that is running InterMute or AdSubtract

SYMPTOMS

Groove Virtual Office and Groove Workspace communications that use port 80 are unsuccessful on a computer that is running InterMute or a default configuration of AdSubtract. When this behavior occurs, some or all workspace data may not synchronize. Additionally, messages to some or all contacts may not reach their recipients.

CAUSE

InterMute and AdSubtract are obsolete browser filtering programs that were designed to selectively filter ads, cookies, pop-up windows, Java and JScript, and other content from Web connections. If Groove uses a port 80 connection for all traffic or for some traffic, InterMute prevents operations that Groove requires. The default configuration of AdSubtract also prevents these operations. However, AdSubtract can be configured to allow for Groove communications.

WORKAROUND

To use Groove together with AdSubtract, you must define the Groove relay servers as custom sites. Then, you must selectively disable filtering to those custom sites. For information about how to disable filtering to custom sites, see AdSubtract Help.

The relay addresses that you have to configure may vary. Follow these steps to determine the relays that are needed for current workspaces and contacts:
  1. Shut down any Web browsers such as Windows Internet Explorer, Firefox, and so on, and then wait two and a half minutes. This wait is to allow for all browser TCP connections to close.
  2. Start Groove, and then log on to your Groove account.
  3. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK to open a Command Prompt window.
  4. At the command prompt, type netstat –n >netlist.txt, and then press ENTER.
  5. Open the Netlist.txt file, and examine the Foreign Address column.
  6. Remove all lines in which the foreign address does not end in :80.
  7. For each foreign address that remains, configure AdSubtract not to filter content from that address.
Notes
  • You may have to repeat this procedure to determine new relays when you add Groove contacts, or you join new Groove workspaces, or if Microsoft reprovisions Groove accounts to improve server performance.
  • Under some network conditions, this procedure may have to be repeated five minutes later and then ten minutes later in order to discover all the Groove relays that are required.
