You are unable to use the release version of Excel 2007 to open an .xlsx file that contains a PivotTable if the file was saved on a computer that has 2007 Office Suite SP 1 installed

On a computer that has 2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 installed, a file that contains a PivotTable or another workbook data object is saved in the Excel OpenXML file format (.xlsx). When you try to open that file on a computer that has the release version of Excel 2007 installed, you are prompted to repair the file. Or, you are notified that the file is corrupted and that the file cannot be opened.

When you try to open a Microsoft Office Excel 2007 workbook, you receive the following error message: When you click Yes, you receive the following recovery report:

This problem may occur if you have certain special formatting characters or if you are working with a PivotTable. Most Excel workbooks that contain a PivotTable are not affected by this problem.

Note The file may open correctly the first time that you open the file in the release version of Excel 2007. However, after you modify the file and then save it, you may experience this problem.

To resolve this problem, install 2007 Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1) and the Office Compatibility Pack SP1 on the computer that is running the release version of Excel 2007.

To work around this problem, use the computer that has Excel 2007 SP1 installed in order to save the file in the Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls) file format. Then, transfer the .xls file to the computer that has the release version of Excel 2007 installed.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
