When you try to connect to Windows LIVE in a Games for Windows – LIVE game, you receive the error message: "Can't download the update."

When you try to install the latest update for Games for Windows - LIVE or a game-specific update from within the game, the following behavior may occur:

• The update seems to be installed. However, the game continues to prompt you to install the update.
• The update is not installed, and you may receive the following error message:
  Can't download the update.
• The installation of the update may stop responding.

This behavior may occur when a third-party utility-management or security application blocks the installation of a system update or a game update that was started by a Games for Windows - LIVE game.

Games for Windows - LIVE system updates

To resolve this issue, download the latest update for Games for Windows - LIVE, restart the computer, and then manually install the update. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Exit the game.
2. Close all open programs and save any open files on which you were working.
3. Get the latest LIVE Update

4. Click Save and save the file to your desktop.
5. Restart the computer. This will end all currently running processes.
   Note: Any open or running process may prevent a successful update of the Games for Windows - LIVE components.
6. After the computer restarts, double-click the Games for Windows - LIVE update that you downloaded to the desktop.
7. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.
8. Restart the computer, if you are prompted to do this.
9. Start the Games for Windows - LIVE game, and then connect to the Windows LIVE service.

Game-specific updates

If a game-specific update is available, you must install that update before you can connect the game to Windows LIVE.
